Application for funding

The DFG SPP ICDP Coordination Office coordinates and supports the scientific activities that take place at German institutes as part of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Programme (ICDP). The DFG Priority Programme “SPP 1006 - ICDP” provides the basis for the central role of scientists based in Germany in these drilling projects. On the following page you will find information on how to apply for research projects in connection with ICDP projects within the framework of the SPP 1006 ICDP.

Application in the DFG Priority Programme 'SPP 1006 - ICDP'

Applications may be submitted for all activities related to past, present and future ICDP drilling. Potential applications include:

  • Preparatory research intended to lead to the submission of a drilling proposal (e.g. site surveys)
  • Accompanying research to ongoing ICDP projects
  • Utilisation of drill cores or other information (e.g. logging data) from completed ICDP drilling projects

Proposals are submitted via the DFG's ELAN portal. You will need an elan user account (DFG ELAN Portal). The proposal submission deadline is announced annually by the DFG and can be found here on the SPP 1006 ICDP website. As a rule, the deadline for submitting proposals is in the second half of September each year.

At least the following documents are required for your application:

  1. description of the project (English)
  2. per applicant: CV with a list of the ten most important publications

You can obtain the current guidelines for submitting proposals from the DFG (Guidelines for Proposals). Important information on the current call for proposals for the SPP ICDP can be obtained from the DFG or the Coordination Office (icdp@ifg.uni-kiel.de). In order to ensure improved coordination of the individual proposals, please contact the coordinator, Prof. Dr Sebastian Krastel, in advance of submitting your proposal.

Special ICDP-relevant information for the application:

  • A presentation of the planned project in the international and national activities at the respective drilling location is requested. This should be shown as a separate content item in the individual applications. If several projects are submitted for one drilling project, a short framework paper is requested that summarises the general status of the drilling project in question and the networking of the individual projects.
  • If you are planning to apply for a large device, please contact Dr. Iris Sonntag at the DFG in advance to discuss this.
  • If you have any queries regarding the suitability of the programme or other persons/projects involved, please contact the SPP ICDP Coordination Office (icdp@ifg.uni-kiel.de).

The project description is the main basis for the evaluation. Applications should be formulated in such a way that they can also be understood by reviewers from other disciplines.
